It’s been a long time coming – years of saving, of searching, of it maybe being the “not quite the right time, ” of dreaming about owning my first home. And then in late March, that dream was realized when I signed my name onto closing documents for a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, traditional brick home in the West Ashley neighborhood of Northbridge Terrace.

I am a West Ashley girl. I was born and raised there and have watched it develop and grow over the years. It has always been where I wanted to own my first home, and as the City of Charleston sets its sights on the redevelopment of the area, I know that it is a solid investment that will only continue to improve in value.

While I am a Realtor and understand the home buying process, being a first time homebuyer is no less stressful. It still requires that you secure financing, walk through an inspection and a CL100 (termite report), deal with repairs (if there are any that are agreed upon) and then think about the actual move and settling into a new life. Couple that with doing it all on your own and it becomes all the more daunting. Plenty of decisions to be made, plenty of checks to be written, but I assure you, all worth the effort.

Because my life seems to be a little hectic these days, when I had the opportunity recently to take a week off and get as much done to the house as possible, I jumped on it.  A new roof went on, I called about quotes on a new garage door, painted the bedrooms and bathrooms, cleaned the kitchen, sneezed a lot, started unpacking boxes that had been in storage for years (which kind of feels like Christmas!) and finally stayed in the house for the first time. All I could think about was Virginia Woolf and “A Room of One’s Own. ” You sometimes don’t realize just how much you need your own space until you finally have it. I’m ready now to entertain friends and family in the backyard, cook on my brown, electric Frigidaire cooktop (ok, some things still need a little updating), plant an herb garden and start a series of DIY projects. What a luxury!
