Renovated home in West Ashley SC
Think “West Ashley, ” and most of us will picture brick bungalows and ranch homes mixed with the vista of retail and restuarants that line Savannah Highway or Hwy 61.  A desirable area for the first time homebuyer, if you take the time to get to know West Ashley you will find some real gems off the beaten path. Close to downtown and right next to the James Island Connector is one such neighborhood, an outlier of sorts from the usual perception of West Ashley.  This area, nearby to the Country Club of Charleston, is home to some of the classic architecture popular in the mid-to-late 20th century.  Great homes with the odd dated product are in the mix.  Our client purchased one of these homes and then spent the next year working with us execute a Charleston renovation and realize their own vision of lowcountry living.

Design Brief : Renovate the brick-built main house to modern standards, yet still remain in keeping with the neighborhood. Create what may be the most fun pool house in Charleston, SC! The architect, Julia Martin, has been working with our group on downtown projects for many years – she has an eye for character, and for adding a touch of the irreverent in us that takes no style too seriously.

Implementation: This project was a huge renovation in the high-end West Ashley neighborhood, The Crescent. It entailed a new state-of-the-art pool house and a full renovation of the existing main house. The design brief was to bring the main house up-to-date with high-end finishes in a plan that would be both functional and beautiful for the client and their three children. The facade of the home remained intact, but the roof at the rear of the house was removed and two bedrooms and a living area were added to the second floor. Reclaimed white oak floors were run throughout, as well as a new trim package. New custom cabinets, counter tops, and tile in each bathroom and kitchen lead to an amazing overall transformation of the house.

The pool house was new construction and reflects a bit of fun that was had in the design. An open floor plan created an amazing space for entertaining and added an additional room for guests. The floating stairs and open catwalk made the space feel open and modern, with a nod to industrial, and the finishing touches of reclaimed heart pine ceiling and staircase kept a classic feel. Cherry wood cabinets completed the kitchen and added additional warmth.
