Being a recent transplant to Charleston means I am learning something new about this great city everyday. Occasionally, I jot down a previously unknown fact and tuck it into my journal.
Here are my Top 10 “Wow – I Didn’t know That!” facts from the first 6 months.
- On any given day in the city you can take a walking tour, a horse-drawn carriage tour, a pedi-cab tour, a harbor tour, a culinary tour, a distillery tour or a ghost tour!
- There is never an “off season” here for tourists.
- Driving over the Ravenel Bridge from Mt. Pleasant into downtown and catching that view of Charleston Harbor never gets old. Never.
- Fort Sumter is in the middle of the Harbor … not on the shore like you might think.
- Charleston peninsula is surrounded by water and affected by the tides. On the days when the tide is really high, some downtown streets are partially under water.
- You never need to call a cab to get around downtown Charleston. Everything is within walking distance. Yes, everything.
- Charleston is called the “Holy City” because of the high number of churches located on the peninsula.
- 2nd Sunday on King Street downtown is always the best Sunday of the month for shopping.
- Waterfront Park is home to a giant fountain in the shape of a pineapple. That makes sense in a city where everyone is just so darn friendly.
- Finding an available parking meter in downtown Charleston can make you weep with joy on that day you’re running late to a meeting. Forgetting to go back and feed it every 2 hours will make you cry when you pay the ticket.
