Elderly couple sitting in a park When planning to make the decision on when and where to retire, the first step is to decide if you are indeed going to retire somewhere other than where you currently reside.  Certainly, if you’ve been living in the northern part of the US, it may be easy to decide to retire to the South, but that still leaves a lot of work to narrow down just where you will ultimately land – and the search can be overwhelming. Retirees often spend hours scouring the internet to discover the best possible places to retire. Charleston, SC and the surrounding lowcountry is among the best places to retire based on the demographics, its coastal location, the abundance of activities, and lifestyle benefits that are tailored to health and wellness. With a variety of distinctly different areas around Charleston you can easily achieve the type of retirement lifestyle you desire.

When you hear “Charleston” you may think of its well-known historic landmarks, or the exclusive beach communities that dot Charleston’s barrier islands, but don’t let those sway your opinion. Charleston’s diverse landscape allows retirees to live in a quiet home overlooking marsh and tidal creeks, or a historic home in one of Charleston’s iconic downtown neighborhoods that offer a walk everywhere lifestyle, or even a “planned activities ” community that caters to your wants and needs. No matter what kind of retirement lifestyle you’ve been dreaming of, Charleston has you covered.

Worried about not having enough to do?  From the popular farmer’s market held downtown in Marion Square, to shopping along King Street, and browsing through the City Market where many locals sell their sweetgrass baskets and household décor, there is no shortage of things to do that keep you outdoors and on the move.  While in downtown check out many other activities that include Art Walks through the French Quarter or Charleston Riverdogs baseball games held at Riley Park, affectionately named “The Joe ” by the locals.  You should take a stroll to visit the historic Battery Park where you’ll be surrounded by beautiful oak trees covered in Spanish moss and spectacular views of the harbor. Many artists, writers, and musicians flock to this beautiful city for art shows, concerts, and book clubs. If you’re a country fan, you might even run into Darius Rucker, well-known from his original band Hootie & The Blowfish and a Charleston local!

Charleston dominates the food scene, whether you’re a Southern soul food fan, a vegetarian, or a foodie with a willingness to try anything. Chef and food writer Anthony Bourdain eventually took a trip down to Charleston and stated that Charleston has, “almost too many buildings, almost too many incredibly talented chefs and almost too much really, really good food.” This isn’t surprising once you consider a food scene that includes a Food + Wine Festival of it’s own and a 4-star restaurant … or two! In 2016, Charleston continued to be among the James Beards Awards nominations as FIG received a nomination for Outstanding Wine Program.  Okay, so the point has been made that the Charleston culinary scene is among the best in the country.

Fitness and wellness has become a top priority for residents in this “outdoor activity ” centered city. From walking, running, yoga, cycling, surfing, to golf, tennis and even stand-up paddleboarding, there truly is something for everyone.  And, if being outdoors simply means relaxing in the fresh air & sunshine with a pole and tackle box, well, we’ve got plenty of that too! Many fishermen make the trip to Haddrell’s Point Tackle in Mount Pleasant to get the best information, gear, and quality service to get any fish on the line, off docks or out on the deep sea. You can purchase your fishing license here and set your line in the water five minutes away. There are many marinas to store your boat no matter what the season.

When it comes to healthcare, there are many acclaimed hospitals, but the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is a national standout. MUSC is located in the heart of downtown and serves as a 732-bed hospital that has the best doctors across the nation as well being a top teaching hospital. In 2015, US News ranks MUSC as South Carolina’s best hospital and granted a top hospital in the nation!  If needed, you have quick access to MUSC from most of the surrounding areas.

So overall, Charleston may be a great location for any retiree. The locals enjoy a great way of life, with endless choices for activities that promote a healthy lifestyle, exceptional dining, and loads of entertainment options.
