When I meet a new client from out of town and review with them their list of "wants and must haves" in a home, I almost always find myself having the "give a little - gain a lot" talk with them. For the out of town buyer wanting to live in historic downtown Charleston, SC sometimes the reality of having no off-street parking, limited out door space or trying to obtain 4 bedrooms all in the same house may be a bit of a shock. But living in downtown Charleston is a lifestyle. It is not always all about the space you purchase but the lifestyle you gain along the way.
To settle for on-street parking is not always a major draw back. A home owner can purchase a parking decal that allows for on-street parking in their neighborhood. Two vehicles for $15.00 year is not such a bad deal. Because the peninsula is not that large, you can walk or bike to everything Charleston has to offer, and you may find that you never need to move your car.
If giving up a yard for your dog seems a challenge, you might find that the trade off of fresh air and exercise turns out to be a greater benefit. A smaller courtyard can still provide a lovely place for an outdoor sanctuary. You can still have a wonderful outdoor space with much less work. A private courtyard is a place you can use for outdoor entertaining and as a place to gather with all of your new friends. No need to worry about making new friends, as you walk around your downtown neighborhood you will easily get to know your neighbors, there is a reason why Charleston has been voted the Friendliest city in America!
The weather in Charleston is wonderful. Average temperatures are 58 degrees in January and 90 degrees in July. This is part of the reason why people love living in Charleston and why having a walkable lifestyle downtown is completely doable. Living downtown you will find wonderful cuisine only a short walk away from your door step - breakfast, lunch or dinner. This includes James Beard nominated restaurants, local, hometown favorites and cozy little cafes & coffee shops. Every meal is an event and prepared to perfection. All served with southern hospitality. After dinner you can catch a play at one of the many theaters in town. Dock Street Theater, Black Fedora, or 34 West Theater to name a few. All within walking distance. You can even have a night cap on your walk home at one of the many night spots in town.
Even residents who live in downtown Charleston have errands to run. You can walk to the post office, dry cleaners, pharmacy, bank and then pick up a few groceries on the way back home. But along the way you can take in the beautiful gardens, architecture and history that this breathtaking city has to offer. You may even stop in for a little shopping on world-renowned King Street, or perhaps in the summer, the Saturday morning Farmers Market at Marion Square for lunch and fresh produce. There is always something to do downtown.
Charleston has it all. Wonderful weather, culture and the arts, history, shopping, and world-class cuisine. Not to mention the NY Post named Charleston "One of the 20 Hottest Real Estate Spots in the World."
